I've been told time and again that Five Finger Discount: A Crooked Family History is a must-read for Jersey Citians like myself. It's supposed to be a funny and brutally honest autobiography of one Helene Stapinski, a Polish-Italian-American writer who grew up in the mean, dirty streets of JC with her family of swindlers, bookies, embezzlers, and mobster-wannabees. This Amazon review sums up the different feedback I've received:

Helene Stapinskis story of her Polish immigrant family is a real eye-opener into the way of life of a New Jersey family of crooks. Tony Soprano eat your heart out !

Fortunately, we have the honor of meeting Ms. Stapinski right here in her old stomping grounds tonight (Friday, 10/7) at one of my favorite DoJo restaurants:

Helene Stapinski, author of "Five Finger Discount: A Crooked Family History," and most recently, "Baby Plays Around : A Love Affair, with Music," will be appearing at Melt on 10/7 between 7pm – 8:30pm. Copies of both books will be available for sale and autographs. Helene is thrilled to be coming back to Jersey City for this occasion.

All proceeds from sales of the books will be donated to the Salvation Army Hurricane Relief Fund courtesy of Melt.

Good food, a good book and a good cause. What better way to start off the weekend?
